Dragoljub Djuricic

Dragoljub Djuricic was born in 1954 in Cetinje, Montenegro. He spent his early childhood and youth in Herceg Novi, where he was a very successful water polo player in the "Jadran" water polo club. He has been living in Belgrade since 1975. The beginning of his musical career follows a very interesting fact: at the examination for entry to the school of music in Dubrovnik, he was refused for a lack of talent! At the beginning of the 70's he entered the music studio for the first time, and the following 10 years he played with the most known singers of Yugoslavia, such as Zdravko Colic, the biggest star of pop music, with whom he played in 1978 and 2001 in front of the full "Red Star" football stadium in Belgrade. He took a part in realisation of the first Yugoslavian musical film "Earthquake on a Journey". At the end of the 70's he became a member of the YU GROUP, and afterward he joined the most famous jazz & rock'n'roll band called LEB & SOL (Bread and Salt). In the middle of the 80's he played with the hard rock band called KERBER, and then returned to the LEB & SOL. During the LEB & SOL's tour, he played in the best clubs all over the world, such as; CBGB - New York; Astoria, Ronnie Scott' S, Riverside studio-London; Paradiso-Amsterdam; Croz Caruntc - Chicago; 9:30 - Washington; Sony Expo Training Course 92 - Seville, Thin Lizzy - Toronto; Bataclan, New Morning Festival - Paris, Milos - Salonique. At the end of the 1998 he has founded "The Drums Company" with which he played concerts in the largest cities of Yugoslavia, in the largest room in arena Sava Center of Belgrade, in Skoplje, Budva, on the Grad Teatar Festival, in Monte Carlo, in Trafo (Budapest), in Voss Jazz Festival (Norway), The Theatre Festival (Zurich, Switzerland), Sidney Entertainment Center and Melbourne (Australia)... He has composed the music for many plays (Art, Lights to me, Cyrano of Bergerac, Reservior Dogs, Closer, Burn This, Pop Corn, Enfantillages) and has composed the music for the ballet "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for the National Theatre of Belgrade. This ballet was proclaimed the best spectacle of the year 2002. Besides the music, Dragoljub Djuricic also makes paintings, illustrations and he played in theatre play "Release of the town of Skoplje" of KPGT. “The music is based on the rhythm, so is the life. If the heart does not beat three times in rate, the fourth time it won't beat at all.” Dragoljub Djuricic The specific way of Djuricic’s interpretation, which is marked by his constant search for balance between strong emotions and a perfect technique, brought him a world fame and classified him among the most popular musicians of Yugoslavia, which is not only due to his undeniable qualities of an author-interpreter, but also due to his exceptionally communicative nature. He belongs to the small number of drummers who succeeded in making the drum a leading solo instrument in the bend, and not the one that just follows the rest of instruments. His concerts all over the world are regularly followed by daily and weekly press, and always draw a sharp attention of the media: London Evening for performance in “Ronnie Scott’s”, Irish media for the performance on the Festival of r'n'r groups of radio European diffusion, Washington Post for the excellent presentation ethno-music of Balkan among jazz and rock'n'roll bands, Toronto Star, Chicago Platform, Dag Blaget of Norway - are just a few taken out of the group. This is an article which describes Dragoljub Djuricic: 'Altough a powerful and accomplished rock drummer, Dragoljub Đuričić specialised in thumping out rolling, irregular beat on the toms in a way reminiscent of Edward Vesala.' INDEPENDENT, 1995. The Premier's "Rebound 4" catalog counts him among the best drummers of the world. In 1982, he obtained the prestigious "Village Voice" prize for the best musical interpretation in theater play in Off Broadway. In Yugoslavia he obtained two times one after the other the prize for the best interpreter. "Among all the events in ‘96 and ‘97, and among all the politicians that were present back then, I remember only Dragoljub Djuricic and his drummers." Bogdan Tirnanic, Telegraf "In this country, Dragoljub Djuricic became an institution, but in order to survive, he had to become an expert." Bogdan Tirnanic, Politika His political engagement is marked by his active participation in the student demonstrations in 1991, and particularly at the time inhabitants protests in ‘96 and ’97 in Belgrade, when he together with the group of young drummers gave rate/rhythm to the "the three months of revolt". In those days, precisely in January 1997, he played at central square in Belgrade in front of 500 000 people. In autumn 2000 he had a leading role in pre-election campaign of the party in opposition DOS. The sound of the drums was like a primary call for fight, and it was the main starter of people's revolt. In September 2000, he played in front of the audience that counted more than 400 000 people, but the role of his drums culminated on October 5, 2000, when the regime of ex-Yugoslavian president Milosevic was destroyed. For the participation in these events he received a reward for “The Most Heroic Artist of Resistance”. He is a founder and also took a part in many humanitarian actions and concerts for the children and orphans. In August 2002 he composed and interpreted the musical part of the program for opening of FINA cup in Belgrade. Dragoljub Djuricic is a member of the Council of G17 Plus, one of the most powerful non-governmental organizations in Serbia that gathers experts from all different fields of social life. He was the president of The Jazz Association in Serbia and Montenegro. He is the initiator of the foundation of the Organization for the defense of interpretation rights; he is also a Chairman Initiator of Council that deals with defense of authorial rights, interpretation rights, defense of phonogram and intellectual property.
